Description
This instrument was purchased by David Schnaufer in 1994 from an unnamed woman who had purchased it in Ashland, Kentucky. The maker, date, and place are unknown, but a possible "mate" to this instrument is held at Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, West Virginia. Schnaufer played this instrument often during his lifetime.

Physical description
yellow poplar; hourglass-shaped dulcimer; upper bout is angular rather than curved; no nails; paint/stain chipping; headstock a carved scroll; pegs are hand-carved walnut, straight, not tapered; two pegs identical and larger than the third; solid fretboard; nut and bridge appear to be ebony; instrument fretted under one string; 14 frets, wire staples; sound holes are hearts, pointing in opposite directions; lightly incised hex signs on front and back; instrument in good condition
