This music box dates from the late 19th century, and was purchased by David Schnaufer around 1990 for $325 from an antique dealer in Black Mountain, NC.

Physical description

poplar; evidence of green milk paint on top and sides; top and bottom extend roughly 1/2" beyond sides; nails at corners; sides may have had yellow paint; previous owner attached a card saying "mid 19th Century - Sullivan County, TN"; alternating sound holes with some damage; 15 frets, set all the way to the edge, and made of heavy staples; slots for 5 strings; 4 tuners, 2 of which appear to be original, and 1 other replaced by a door latch (!); additional notch marks on top of instrument with the letters "J A M"; one back corner broken off, split in one corner of top
